History of Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park is named after the hunter, Major Jim Corbett,which was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park. This park is situated at Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The Corbett National Park act as a protected area for the critically endangered Bengal Tiger of India.
The Project Tiger,Indian wildlife protection initiative,has been launched for secure survival of the Bengal Tiger.
Prior to 1815-20 of the British Rule,the forest of the Jim Corbett National Park were the private property of the local rulers.
On January 3,1907,Sir.Michael Keen for the first time referred to the possibility of turning these forest into the game sanctuary but the proposal was turned down. Later in 1934 the governor,Sir Malcolm Hailey,supported the idea of having a sanctuary and wanted enactment of a law to give it protection.
The area was made into a reserve forest by the Chief Conservator of Forest to overcome the delays that legislation would entail.

In consultation with Major Jim Corbett,the boundaries of the park were demarcated and in 1936,the United Provincial national Park Act was enforced and it became the first National Park of India.
Initially the area of the Park was about 323.75 sq.km. but it was expanded to 520 sq.km to accommodate wild animals like Tigers and Elephants.
In 1973,the wildlife preservationist and naturalists from around the world launched PROJECT TIGER the most prestigious and biggest total environmental conservation project.
